Why do I need to see a MFM specialist?

Patients can be referred to see us for many reasons during pregnancy, such as:

• Comprehensive fetal anatomy ultrasound
• Amniocentesis
• Women with medical or surgical disorders, such as:
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Preeclampsia (toxemia)
  • Diabetes or other endocrine disorders
  • Kidney or gastrointestinal disease
  • Infectious diseases
• Healthy women whose pregnancy is at markedly increased risk for adverse outcome, such as:
  • Abnormal AFP (alpha fetoprotein) blood test
  • Twins, triplets or more
  • Recurrent pre-term labor and delivery
  • Premature rupture of membranes
  • Recurrent pregnancy loss
  • Suspected fetal growth restriction (baby not growing enough)
• There may be other reasons not listed above.

How is care coordinated between my provider and the MFM sub-specialist at Regional Perinatal Group?

We recognize that your obstetricians-gynecologist is qualified by training and experience to manage many complicated pregnancies. As Maternal-Fetal Medicine sub-specialists, we complement your obstetrician’s care by providing consultations and/or co-management for complicated patients both before (pre-conceptional counseling) and during pregnancy. The relationship between your provider and the Maternal-Fetal Medicine sub-specialist here at Regional Perinatal Group will depend upon the acuity of the condition and local circumstances.
