Working with Mother and Doctor for a Healthy Delivery

Cerclage Evaluation and Placement

When a woman’s cervix is weak (sometimes called cervical insufficiency or incompetent cervix) she is more likely to deliver prematurely because the cervix shortens or opens too early. In some cases, a procedure called cervical cerclage may prevent recurrence of preterm birth.

The doctors at RPG will ask you questions about your history, perform ultrasound of your cervix, and integrate the information regarding your specific case to determine whether you may benefit from this procedure.

Cervical cerclage is not without risk. Rupture of membranes, infection, bleeding, and initiation of preterm labor can all occur. Our goal at RPG is to give you the best information necessary to make the decision regarding cerclage placement.

If the doctors at RPG recommend cerclage placement, your obstetrician may choose to perform the procedure, or they may ask one of the doctors at RPG to place the cerclage.
